With Trump Set to Meet on Fate of Paris Agreement, We Consider the Administration's Options

President Donald J. Trump and members of his administration will meet Thursday to consider the fate of the United States' role in the Paris Agreement and the US approach to its international climate commitments.

How will Team Trump treat its obligations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement? What are the legal options and processes available to Team Trump if it intends to back away from the Paris Agreement? And what are the implications of those choices?

Lisa DeMarco and Jonathan McGillivray discuss four main options for Team Trump to avoid the US's international climate commitments in an article published in IETA Insights today:

  • The Obvious: withdraw from the Paris Agreement;

  • The Impatient: withdraw from the UNFCCC;

  • The Expedient: repudiate the Obama executive agreement; and

  • The Fake: continue as a party to the Paris Agreement but undermine it through domestic policy.

The article is published as a teaser for the forthcoming International Emissions Trading Association's IETA Insights, a new quarterly publication that IETA will launch next month. To read the full article, click here.
